Fansipan, Muong Hoa Valley, Cat Cat and the villages around town: what each place is, when to go, and which tours include it.
Sapa is a mountain town in Lao Cai Province, in the Hoang Lien Son range near the Chinese border, at roughly 1,500–1,600 m. Most visitors split their time between three things: the rice terraces and villages of Muong Hoa Valley, the summit of Fansipan (3,143 m, the highest peak in Indochina), and the town's weekend market.
The villages are home to Black H'mong, Red Dao, Tay and Giay communities. Terraces are green from May to August and golden from mid-September to early October; winter mornings are often fog-covered and cold, and snow is occasional.
From Hanoi, the overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai takes about 8 hours; coaches and limousine vans use the expressway in roughly 5 to 6 hours. Both are followed by a transfer of about 35 km up to Sapa. Compare options on our Hanoi to Sapa transport page.
